iOS 27 - Today!

There are iOS updates.

And then there are iOS updates.

The sort where I install it, spend five minutes poking around the Home Screen, discover three new icons and eventually think:

Yes, very nice. Anyway…

This isn't simply another annual collection of prettier menus, tweaked buttons and a couple of features buried seventeen levels deep inside Settings.

For me, iOS 27 feels like the point where the iPhone begins changing from a smartphone containing apps into something much more interesting:

And considering how much of my digital life already revolves around Apple, that makes this update particularly fascinating.

My iPhone isn't just a telephone.

It is my camera. 📸

My sat-nav. 🗺️

My music player. 🎵

My communications centre. 💬

My calendar. 📅

My photo archive.

My travel companion.

My connection to Vanilla, Torque, drones, Apple Music, smart-home gadgets and half the other technology orbiting Planet NIX.

And with iOS 27, Apple is attempting to connect far more of those individual pieces together.

That is where things become seriously exciting. 🚀

Apple says iOS 27 is available from 14 September 2026, with Siri AI rolling out initially in English.

So this isn't some distant WWDC demonstration anymore.

Let's get straight to the elephant wearing an Apple Watch.

For years Siri has existed somewhere between genuinely useful and magnificently confused.

Ask it to turn the kitchen lights on?

Brilliant. 💡

Set a timer?

Easy.

Call somebody?

No problem.

Ask anything vaguely complicated?

Suddenly Siri developed the intellectual confidence of a Labrador confronted with a tax return.

That is precisely why Siri AI could be the most important part of iOS 27.

Apple describes the new Siri as a conversational AI assistant powered by Apple Intelligence. It can handle open-ended questions, continue proper back-and-forth conversations and assist with brainstorming, information and everyday tasks.

That sounds simple.

It isn't.

Because underneath it sits something much bigger.

This could completely change how useful Siri becomes.

Apple says Siri AI can search through personal information to find things such as an old photograph, a buried email or a note stored on the iPhone.

Think about that.

That is a massive difference.

Imagine me saying:

Or:

Or:

Or:

That is much closer to how human memory works.

I don't necessarily remember the folder.

I don't necessarily remember the filename.

I remember the story.

And if my phone can understand enough context to connect the story to the information, searching suddenly becomes far more natural.

That is the direction I have wanted technology to move in for years.

Less filing cabinet.

More assistant.

This may be one of the sleeper features of iOS 27.

Apple says Siri AI can answer questions related to whatever is currently on the screen.

That has enormous potential.

Instead of explaining everything from scratch, I can potentially point Siri towards the thing I am already looking at.

I could be viewing a campsite.

A route.

A photograph.

An email.

A product.

A map.

A message.

Then simply ask something about it.

That removes one of the biggest bits of friction we've traditionally had with digital assistants.

Humans communicate using context constantly.

“What's that?”

“Where is this?”

“When does that start?”

“Add that to my calendar.”

“Remind me about this tomorrow.”

Previous digital assistants frequently needed the whole story repeated from the beginning.

iOS 27 is designed to understand more of what is already happening.

That sounds a small distinction.

I think it could prove enormous.

This is where AI stops being a clever talking box and starts becoming useful.

Apple says Siri AI can perform actions inside apps including Messages, Music and Reminders. Examples Apple gives include creating reminders, making events, emailing, creating notes, manipulating photos and adding content to albums.

This is precisely the direction personal AI needs to go.

I don't want an AI assistant that merely tells me how to perform a six-step task.

I want to say:

Imagine saying:

“Add this address to tomorrow's route.”

“Put this song into my driving playlist.”

“Remind me to charge the drone batteries when I get home.”

“Create an album containing today's bike ride photos.”

“Send that information to the person I was just messaging.”

That is when an assistant becomes an assistant.

Not a search box wearing a voice.

Another major change is that Siri AI can access information online and answer wider questions using current web information.

This has been one of Siri's historic weaknesses.

The modern AI world has moved incredibly quickly.

We have become accustomed to asking conversational systems complicated questions and receiving detailed responses.

Traditional Siri increasingly felt like it belonged to an earlier generation.

iOS 27 is Apple's attempt to close that gap.

The really interesting part is the combination.

A generic AI system can know the world.

Your iPhone can know your apps and your information.

This one immediately caught my attention.

Siri isn't just floating around the operating system anymore.

Apple has created a dedicated Siri app.

Conversations can be kept together, revisited and even continued across devices such as the iPhone and iPad. Apple says conversations can also be pinned for quick access.

Now we're talking.

That makes Siri feel much closer to a persistent AI workspace rather than a command interface that disappears the moment I've finished speaking.

For someone like me who constantly jumps between ideas, plans, routes, technology, photography, journeys and projects, persistent AI conversations make far more sense.

Start something on the iPhone.

Carry on with it later on another Apple device.

The whole Apple ecosystem suddenly becomes part of the same conversation.

That is very Apple.

Siri AI can now generate text and give feedback on writing virtually anywhere text can be entered.

In Messages and Mail, Apple says it can even adapt to the user's writing style, punctuation and tone.

Now this gets interesting.

Imagine knocking out a rough message:

“Running late. Traffic terrible. Be there 20 mins.”

Then asking Siri to tidy it up without turning me into a Victorian solicitor.

Or drafting an email.

Or rewriting a note.

Or making something friendlier.

Or shortening something.

AI is becoming woven into the operating system instead of existing solely inside a separate app.

That distinction matters enormously.

Now we enter dangerous territory.

Because if there is one feature capable of making me disappear down a technological rabbit hole for several hours, it's this.

Apple has integrated Siri AI and Visual Intelligence into the Camera experience.

Point the camera towards something and Siri can help identify it, search for information about it and answer questions.

That is fascinating.

Point it at a landmark.

Ask about its history.

Point it towards an object.

Ask what it is.

Point it at food.

Ask what's in it.

Point it towards something unusual while travelling.

Ask Siri about it.

My camera stops being purely a device for recording the world.

And THAT is an incredibly interesting shift.

iOS 27 introduces considerably more ambitious intelligent photo editing.

Apple highlights Spatial Reframing, an Extend tool and an improved Clean Up tool capable of removing larger unwanted objects.

For photography this could be enormously useful.

We've all taken that photograph where everything is nearly right.

The subject is slightly too close to the edge.

The composition needs breathing room.

Somebody's bright red carrier bag has wandered into the background.

A signpost appears to be growing from somebody's skull.

Being able to intelligently extend, clean and reframe images directly inside the normal photo workflow could make advanced editing dramatically more accessible.

I'm particularly interested in this for everyday iPhone photography.

I still want photographs to look like photographs.

But intelligent tools that fix composition problems or clean distractions without requiring a complete editing session?

Absolutely.

Apple also says Image Playground can now create higher-quality imagery across many styles, including photorealistic imagery, and transform images from text descriptions.

The significant bit here isn't merely that Apple has another image generator.

It's that image generation is being built into an ecosystem containing my photos, messages, documents and apps.

Generative AI becomes less of a destination.

More of a tool sitting quietly in the toolbox.

That's probably how AI will eventually disappear into everyday computing.

Not with a giant flashing:

sign.

It'll simply become how things work.

Safari receives two features I particularly like.

Tabs can be automatically grouped by subject, helping organise the swamp of pages that inevitably builds up.

Let's not pretend we don't all do it.

One minute:

“I'm just checking one thing.”

Twenty-three tabs later:

“Apparently I am now conducting a doctoral thesis into campervan wheel offsets.”

More interestingly, Safari gains Notify Me.

Apple says Safari can monitor pages for changes such as price reductions or stock availability and alert you when something changes.

Now THAT could be genuinely useful.

Watching an accessory?

Waiting for something to return to stock?

Keeping an eye on a price?

Safari can potentially do the lurking for me.

Very civilised.

Apple's Passwords app will identify weak or compromised passwords, and a future software update is expected to let it update supported passwords on the user's behalf.

This is one of those features that doesn't produce glamorous keynote photographs.

But it might be one of the most valuable.

Password security has been ridiculous for years.

Create fifty unique complex passwords.

Don't reuse them.

Change compromised ones.

Remember none of them.

Try not to scream.

Anything that automates the boring security housekeeping is welcome in NIX Towers.

I've always thought Apple Shortcuts was incredibly powerful.

I've also occasionally looked at it and thought:

iOS 27 aims to simplify automation by letting users describe the Shortcut they want using ordinary language.

Apple's example is essentially telling the phone what should happen when leaving work, then letting the system connect the necessary actions.

This could be transformative.

Natural-language automation removes the biggest obstacle to Shortcuts:

Suddenly I can imagine things like:

“When I leave home for a campervan trip, remind me to check the fridge, leisure battery and water.”

“When I finish a Torque ride, open Strava and my photos.”

“When I connect to Vanilla, start my driving playlist.”

Now we're getting somewhere.

This might actually be the bit I'll appreciate every single day.

Apple has spent considerable effort improving performance.

And the numbers are not trivial.

Apple says apps can launch up to 30% faster.

New photographs can appear in the Photos library up to 70% faster.

AirDrop transfers can run up to 80% faster.

Eighty percent faster AirDrop?

Yes please.

Anyone regularly throwing big photographs and video clips between Apple devices will understand exactly why that caught my attention.

This is exactly the sort of operating-system improvement I like.

Not simply:

“Look at this new animation.”

Instead:

That's proper engineering.

Here's another feature that may sound boring until the moment it saves your bacon.

Apple says iOS 27 can switch more smoothly between Wi-Fi and mobile-data connections.

The idea is that the iPhone chooses the best available connection with less interruption when moving between networks.

Imagine leaving home while using navigation.

Driving away from Wi-Fi coverage.

Or walking from somewhere with Wi-Fi while on a call.

The iPhone should handle that transition more gracefully.

This is exactly the sort of invisible technology I love.

When it works perfectly, you shouldn't even notice it.

Apple's Liquid Glass interface continues in iOS 27, but Apple has refined it.
